Chinese 110 : Intermediate Chinese (2)

Course Objectives

We employ a multiple-skill approach and the immersion method in this multimedia-enhanced course. The course fulfills the language requirements of all B.A., business, information science, and some science programs. It also counts toward the Chinese minor requirements.

Building on the skills you acquired in Chinese 001, Chinese 002, and Chinese 003 (the prerequisites to Chinese 110), this course expands your knowledge of the language and cultures of the Chinese-speaking peoples in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and around the world. To that end, there are both language-learning objectives and socio-cultural ones in this course. Because this is an intermediate language course, about 85% of our time will be spent in language learning and about 15% in cultural issues. Research indicates that the more knowledge you have about the context in which the target language is used, the higher your overall linguistic proficiency level will be. Therefore, we will watch films and have class discussions about the films.

As the third course in the Chinese language series, this course focuses on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and is directed toward bringing you substantially closer to meeting the goals of the program, which consist of a rating of Intermediate-Mid in listening, speaking, writing, and reading on a scale formulated by a professional language teaching organization. It also intends to introduce you to frequently-used grammatical constructions in the Chinese language and to give you an active vocabulary of about 1500 words.

Please note that this course fulfills the language requirements of all B.A., business, information science, and some science programs. It also counts toward the Chinese minor requirements. Questions regarding the Chinese minor may be directed to Prof. Alex Huang.
