Colloquy on Asia in the Era of Globalization (CAEG)

Focus on Asia: The State of Nations and Ethnic Conflict: 2004-05
The current climate of global change and conflict has intensified the need for exploration and dissemination of knowledge in and about the Asian arena. International awareness and diversity are two growing areas of scholarly concern, and are related to the study of economics, political issues, religion, regionalism, demographics, and culture at our university and beyond. This focus will address both recent crises and historical contexts.
Since September 11, 2001, several Chronicle of Higher Education articles have described the efforts of American universities to give greater attention to historically under-represented areas of scholarship (identified as non-Western, though that dichotomized term may not be fully acceptable). With the help of visiting scholars, part of our intervention will be to understand the inter-relationships between economies, politics, and geography, as well as visual and textual cultures within Asian and in perceptions of Asia. Courses may include: "Asia and Globalization," "American Economic Interests and Asia," "Ethnic Conflict and Cooperation in Asia," "Nationalism and the Intra-Asian Arena," "Comparative Religions," "Identity Politics: The Case of China," "Postcolonial Politics," and "Global Politics and East Asian Affairs."
